What are the government rebates available for solar?
In 2023, the NSW government introduced the Solar Homes Program to help households install solar panels by offering rebates and interest-free loans. This initiative aims to add 2.6 GW of solar capacity across the state, lowering electricity bills for thousands of households and reducing carbon emissions.
Eligible households can get a rebate of up to $3,000 for installing a solar panel system with a capacity of up to 10 kilowatts. Additionally, low-income households may qualify for interest-free loans to cover the initial costs of installing solar panels in NSW.
What are the government rebates available for batteries?
If you’re eligible, you could access incentives:
- between $1600 to $2400 off the up-front installation costs of a battery for homes and businesses with existing solar, depending on the size of the battery
- between $250 to $400 for connecting your household or business battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This incentive is available twice, a minimum of 3 years apart.
For homes and businesses without solar, the incentive can be priced into a quote for a new solar and battery system installation.
How does the financing work with solar?
Low interest loans are available when choosing to go solar. This allows homeowners to install solar with no up front costs, and pay off the system over time (generally 3-5 years).
This means your electricity bills will be cut down from the day your solar is installed, and your repayments towards the solar are generally around the same as your previous electricity bills.
When your solar is paid off, you will no longer need to worry about paying big power bills or solar bills!
How does solar work?
Solar power works by using solar panels to capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through photovoltaic cells. This electricity powers your home or business, reducing reliance on the grid. Any excess energy produced can be sent back to the grid, earning you credits (feed-in tariffs). Solar power systems are particularly effective in Australia due to the country's abundant sunlight, making it a cost-efficient and eco-friendly energy solution.
How do batteries work?
Solar batteries store excess energy generated by your solar panels, allowing you to use it when your system isn’t producing power, such as at night or during cloudy periods. This reduces your reliance on the grid and maximises your solar energy use. Batteries help increase energy independence and can also provide backup power during outages.
